Letters of Reference Etiquette

Who should write letters of reference?

You will certainly need letters of reference, usually at least three, to complete your application for graduate study.

Typically, at least two of the three letters that you request for your graduate school applications should be from academic references. You should not request letters from friends, family members or your therapist.

When should letters be requested?

Early. It is very annoying for your references to be given a short timeframe in which to write a letter. At least two months in advance, you should request letters.

How do I request a letter of reference?

See the linked document for tips. It is likely that whomever you request a letter from will have known many people as students and/or supervisees who have asked for letters -- tell your references what makes you a strong candidate for graduate school. Do not be offended that your reference needs to be reminded about all the wonderful things you have accomplished and the great characteristics you possess. Simply asking for a letter without providing any additional information does not maximize your odds for receiving a good reference.
